What are Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)?

These are the everyday activities involved in one's personal care. Such as getting dressed, self-feeding, bathing, toileting and walking by oneself. It can also include transferring (moving) from a bed to a chair.

How do I know if a Long Term Care insurance policy is right for me? How do I find a senior sensitive professional to help me and answer my questions? Should my parents purchase a policy? Should I?

Obtain a good long term care insurance check list from a Certified Senior Advisor and ask what resources she has to help you find the right resource. A few things to look for include: what is the benefit amount and the length of the benefit? Can I remain in my home or must I go to a nursing home to receive the benefits? What is the waiting period (also known as the elimination period)?

How do I find a reputable in-home care provider? There are so many out there.

A good in-home care provider company will screen the care-giver. Ask about their interview process, if they test for drugs, if a supervisor tests the skills of the care-giver prior to hiring and at intervals during their employment. Ask about turnover, length of service the care-giver has been with the company. A Certified Senior Advisor has done all your leg work and home work for you. They know these answers.

Is there a way that my parent can stay in her home with some form of electronic device that will alert me or someone else if something goes wrong and she is alone?

Yes, emergency response systems can be worn as a necklace or bracelet and will alert a designated person if a senior should fall or otherwise be incapacitated. There is an installation charge and monthly fee. A Certified Senior Advisor will provide you with numerous resource choices.

How do I find a senior sensitive professional who I can talk to about what resources are out there?

Calling a Certified Senior Advisor is the first step to self-education, assistance and knowledge of the "senior world." She can meet you in your home or office for your convenience and assess your senior needs. A personalized, organized written plan of action will be yours. This will provide resources, guidance, understanding and most importantly, peace of mind.
